Something not working?
10 concrete problems, each with the actual cause and a step-by-step fix — not generic "try restarting your phone" filler. Organised by category; use Ctrl/Cmd+F to jump straight to your symptom.
Install issues
"App not installed" error when tapping the APK
Likely cause: Almost always one of three causes: (1) a partial/corrupted download, (2) an existing install with a conflicting signature, or (3) insufficient storage.
Fix
- 1 Delete the APK and re-download it — a truncated download is the most common cause.
- 2 If you have an old GB WhatsApp Pro or a differently-signed build installed, uninstall it first (this will remove local chat data — back up first if possible), then install the new APK.
- 3 Check you have at least 250 MB of free storage.
- 4 Confirm "Install unknown apps" is enabled for the specific app you're installing from (browser or file manager) — this is a per-app permission on Android 8+.
Installing GB WhatsApp Pro logs you out of the official WhatsApp, or vice versa
Likely cause: You used the SAME phone number on both apps — WhatsApp only permits one active mobile session per number, so activating a session on the second app invalidates the first.
Fix
- 1 Use two different phone numbers — one for the official WhatsApp, one for GB WhatsApp Pro.
- 2 If you only have one number, decide which app is primary and accept that the other logs out whenever you switch.
- 3 For a dual-number setup, a spare SIM or an eSIM (many carriers now support inactive/data-only eSIMs cheaply) solves this cleanly.
Play Protect re-blocks the app on every single update, even after "Install anyway"
Likely cause: Play Protect re-scans every new APK independently — the "Install anyway" override from a previous version does not carry forward to a new file with a different hash.
Fix
- 1 This is expected behaviour, not a bug — repeat the "Install anyway" tap for each new version.
- 2 If you install frequently, consider disabling Play Protect scanning entirely (Play Store → profile → Play Protect → settings gear → toggle off) — only do this if you exclusively install from sources you trust.
- 3 Always independently verify the hash/signature regardless of what Play Protect says — its "unrecognised app" warning is not a security judgement, just a Play-Store-origin check.
Account & verification
SMS OTP never arrives, or "waiting for SMS" spinner never resolves
Likely cause: Carrier-side SMS filtering, incorrect country code entry, or the number being temporarily rate-limited by WhatsApp's verification servers after multiple attempts.
Fix
- 1 Double-check the country code — a wrong or missing "+91" (or your country's code) is the single most common cause.
- 2 Wait the full 60 seconds before requesting a resend; repeated immediate retries can trigger WhatsApp's rate limiting.
- 3 Use the "Call me" / voice OTP option if SMS repeatedly fails — some carriers filter application-generated SMS more aggressively than voice calls.
- 4 If neither works after 3 attempts, wait 24 hours before trying again — this usually indicates a temporary server-side rate limit on the number.
Performance & notifications
App closes immediately after the splash screen, every time
Likely cause: Usually a corrupted local database (often from an interrupted update) or insufficient RAM causing Android to kill the process during initial load.
Fix
- 1 Clear the app cache: Settings → Apps → GB WhatsApp Pro → Storage → Clear Cache (this does NOT delete your chats).
- 2 If that doesn't help, force-stop the app, restart your phone, then reopen.
- 3 Check available RAM — close other heavy apps before opening, especially on devices with 3 GB RAM or less.
- 4 As a last resort, reinstall over the existing app (not uninstall-then-install) — this repairs a corrupted install while preserving the chat database in most cases.
Messages arrive but notifications appear minutes late, or not at all
Likely cause: Almost always Android's battery optimisation killing the app's background process — this is an OS-level restriction, not a GB WhatsApp Pro bug, and affects every non-Play-Store app similarly.
Fix
- 1 Settings → Apps → GB WhatsApp Pro → Battery → set to "Unrestricted" (exact wording varies by Android skin).
- 2 On Xiaomi/MIUI: also enable "Autostart" for the app in Security app → Permissions.
- 3 On Samsung: Settings → Apps → GB WhatsApp Pro → Battery → disable "Put app to sleep" and remove from the sleeping-apps list.
- 4 Disable any system-wide "Adaptive Battery" exception you may have set up, or add the app to the exception list explicitly.
Media, backup & data
Photos/videos in chats show a spinner forever, never load
Likely cause: Usually a network/storage-permission issue rather than an app bug — media downloads require both network access and storage write permission.
Fix
- 1 Check Settings → Apps → GB WhatsApp Pro → Permissions → confirm Storage/Photos and Videos is allowed.
- 2 Switch networks (Wi-Fi ↔ mobile data) — some networks or VPNs block the CDN domains media is served from.
- 3 Menu → GBSettings → Storage and data → confirm "Auto-download media" is enabled for your current network type.
- 4 If a specific file consistently fails, ask the sender to resend it — occasionally the sender-side upload itself failed.
"Restore" option never appears during setup, even with a valid backup present
Likely cause: The backup folder isn't in the exact expected path, or the backup was made by a different version with an incompatible database schema.
Fix
- 1 Confirm the backup sits at exactly /storage/emulated/0/GBWhatsApp/Databases/ — a backup copied to a different folder won't be auto-detected.
- 2 Make sure you install GB WhatsApp Pro BEFORE the folder is in place — copying the folder after first launch can be too late for the setup flow to detect it.
- 3 If restoring from a much older backup, the schema may not be forward-compatible — try installing an intermediate version first, or accept partial restore.
- 4 As a fallback, use per-chat Export (inside the old install, if still accessible) to save individual conversations as text files.
Feature-specific
Ghost Mode is on, but contacts still see "online"
Likely cause: Ghost Mode's online-status suppression can take one app restart to fully propagate, or a per-chat privacy override is conflicting with the global toggle.
Fix
- 1 Force-close and reopen the app after enabling Ghost Mode — the toggle sometimes needs a fresh session to apply to active connections.
- 2 Check GBSettings → Privacy → Hide Online Status is ALSO explicitly enabled — Ghost Mode is a convenience toggle but some builds still respect the underlying individual setting if it was previously set to "off".
- 3 Confirm you're not in an active call or recently sent a message — activity indicators can briefly override the hidden status for a few seconds after an action.
File attachment fails or is silently capped despite the 1 GB claim
Likely cause: The 1 GB ceiling is the app's internal limit — actual delivery also depends on the recipient's network and WhatsApp's own server-side handling of very large transfers, which can throttle or reject files well below 1 GB on poor connections.
Fix
- 1 Try on Wi-Fi rather than mobile data — large uploads are far more likely to time out on cellular.
- 2 If a specific file consistently fails, check its actual size — some file managers round display sizes; verify with a long-press → Properties.
- 3 Compress video files before sending if they exceed ~500 MB — extremely large single files have a higher failure rate regardless of the app's advertised ceiling.
